Welcome to my Step Out page!
I am asking you to support me in the Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes® event because finding a cure for diabetes is urgent and means so much to me personally.
This is my story:
I myself was diagnosed as an adult. Ironically at the same age my mother was diagnosed.
Diabetes has always been in the forefront of our lives. Ive always known someone in my own family struggling with it. Some take pills some take shots but all of us have an exhausting journey day in and day out.
The first year that i was diabetic I found it hard to keep my numbers where they should be. I am so grateful for the support system i have. My mom who had learned through her own mistakes helped me through getting my own numbers down. While I was getting that in order I found out i was pregnant! A wonderful and scary thing for a woman and an even scarier thing when youre a diabetic. I had a lot of anxiety through my pregnancy hoping that i was making the right choices for my body and my baby. At this time i also had to start taking needles which i am so afraid of. This in itself was a big hurdle i had to overcome.
I am now the mother of 2 beautiful and HEALTHY boys. My sons are 6 and 2. I do worry about how my genetic makeup will impact their life. The very fact that they may be more exposed to this disease than other people scares me. For that reason first, I fudraise. I raise money in hopes that by the time they are 20 years old they will not have to have the same worries because there will be a cure.
I also raise money for advocacy. Being in the hospital for a C-section with my second son made me so aware of how much I was not taken care of as a diabetic to support my own disease. EVERY DIABETIC IS DIFFERENT. I want to raise awareness about how you can’t put us all in a box to treat us, and type 2 diabetes should NEVER be looked at as a “fat disease” that stigma makes me so upset and I hope to break the walls down fighting for it.
This year I dedicate my walk to those we’ve lost the last few years. COVID alone has made the last few years rough, but being diabetic during a pandemic is dangerous. We may now have a vaccine, but the threat will always remain. We’re immunocompromised and any sort of illness is more dangerous for us.
