This past year was WEIRD. First a pandemic, then family tragedy, a prolonged winter storm and a power outage that left ice freezing on the inside of my windows.
So...it can't get worse... and I am hoping this year will be BETTER! I'm hoping to finally finish my twice-deferred goal of running 2845 miles from Newport Beach, CA to Melbourne, FL -- and in doing so, setting a record as the first person ever to run from Disneyland to Disneyworld. I've made it 1800 miles so far and hope to be done by April 5th, 2021.
Why do I run, ride my bike, and do other things for diabetes awareness? I do it to help show the world that we CAN be physically active, we ARE eating healthy, and... WE'RE STILL DIABETIC. To reach those of us who justifiably afraid of dying in our sleep from exercise-induced extreme low blood sugars, and to let them know there are safe ways to stay healthy. To acknowledge that they see health is important to them.
Society judges us as lazy, overweight, inactive, and as people with chronic health problems, unworthy of healthcare coverage. That has to change.
The best solution would be a cure. In the mean time, there is education and advocacy. The American Diabetes Association does research, education, and advocacy very very well. But they need your help.
