2021 Tour de Cure: Chicago, IL (Virtual)

Rim Riders

Welcome to team RimRiders Tour de Cure page: COVID-19 edition.

Why the latter? Because, after being fully vaxxed by early Febreary 2020, pedaling 3,500 road miles, including some 68 miles with Wayne and Matt Ragalie on the 2020 TDC in southeast Wisconsin (Desiree and Kevin Guida joined us virtually from, respectively, Houston, Texas, and northwest Illinois.), I recently contracted a break through COVID infection.

Wham! It hit me unexpectedly and out of the blue. That is, with no warning. Diagnosed positive July 30 as I suddenly spiked a fever and found myself with a rare cough, despite being fairly fit, I now found I was extremely fatigued, with no appetite. Aug. 4, I was admitted to Zablocki VA hospital in Milwaukee, where I was placed in an isolation room on the COVID floor. My doctors then moved me to the COVID ICU team, which includes inceased pulmonary support and monitoring. There, they were able to push heavy oxygen flow, antibiotics, an anti-viral med and steroids to help me battle the infection and inflammation hampering my ability to breathe. We are determined to reach our team goal, one person at a time.

With excellent, committed, professional care from all my VA nurses, the expertise of docs very experienced in treating COVID cases, the incredible love and support of my family and friends, I fought back without needing to be intubated. and, on Aug. 13th I was discharged with oxygen for minimal home use.

My breathing has since returned to normal with full lung capacity, although I'm still building back from some muscular upper leg (quads mainly) weakness due to the hospitalization and being off my feet.

Because I'd been fully vaxxed, and I was able to self manage my diabetes via my insulin pump, I believe my recovery has been going relatively quickly. At the same time, the experience has brought home to me how much more at risk people with diabetes can be if they're exposed to and contract COVID 19. It has given me added incentive and determination to do the Ture de Cure Sept. 26 and to raise the funds the ADA needs to support diabetes research, education and advocacy.

Diabetes and COVID 19 separately are no joke. Together, they can make a lethal combination.

That's why I'm asking you to support us in the Tour de Cure, because finding a cure for diabetes is urgent and personally means so much to me.

This year Tour de Cure celebrates 30 years of making an impact in communities nationwide, and we're riding to champion the over 34 million Americans living with this terrible disease because they need our support.

Help Us Reach Our Goal!

When you donate you make an immediate impact:

* You spread awareness of the devastating effects of diabetes.
* You advocate for a child with diabetes to have the same learning opportunities at school.
* You fund life-saving research that will bring us closer to a cure.
* You provide access to community programs and free resources that help those living with diabetes.

By participating in the Tour de Cure, we hope to inspire others to join us in this vital mission.

Thank you for making a generous donation to this cause that is so important to us.

Yours in peace, power and good will,

Bill Guida

Captain, Team RimRiders
