This past pandemic year has been hard on all of us, and particularly on those of us with diabetes.
People with diabetes are at greater risk from COVID-19. People without diabetes are at greater risk of developing it if they contract COVID-19. And for those with diabetes who avoided the virus, decreased access to health care and the disruption to routines made managing diabetes more difficult.
Lockdowns increased the likelihood of people developing Type 2 diabetes due to reduced activity and increased food and alcohol consumption.
People who already face heightened risk of health problems have experienced even worse hardships. It became clear early in the pandemic that the risk of severe COVID complications was tied to the ability to manage diabetes before getting COVID.
I know from my own research that your social determinates of health (race, poverty, income, social support system) affect your ability to manage diabetes.
To top that, there is now evidence that COVID-19 can cause diabetes.
During all this, the American Diabetes Association stepped up to help lead the research on impact to people with diabetes during the pandemic and lobbied to get Type 1 Diabetes added to the Vaccine Priority list.
Yet, donations to the ADA fell substantially. This is primarily due to the cancellations or virtualization of the Tour de Cure.
This year we pledge to work even harder to raise funds through the Tour de Cure bike ride.
Can you help? Either by joining us for a ride on June 5th or by donating to our ride.
