After two years of virtual events, Tour de Cure "Alaska" is back to being in person, this year on October 1.
At Chateau Saint Michelle Winery.
In Washington State.
My Tour remains virtual in Alaska and started May 30 from Chateau Bramstedt on Echo Lake (wine optional). To date, I’ve logged 36.5 miles (and a 1.9-mile walk with my favorite diabetic) in my quest to help Stop Diabetes.
This year I’m riding in memory of Steve Simpson, whose unexpected death July 8 stunned all who knew this gentle, kind, and funny man. Steve developed type 1 diabetes following an organ transplant, and for eight years he fought the daily battle to balance insulin and blood glucose.
Every year, Steve made a game of being the first to donate after my emails went out. No matter the hour, I knew that shortly after I hit SEND, a subject line would appear on my Screen: You have a new donation!” I smiled, knowing Steve was smiling too.
There will be no more donations from Steve, but the need to Stop Diabetes continues. The American Diabetes Association needs funds to continue
• researching treatments that transform lives;
• advocating for lower costs of life-saving insulin;
• sponsoring camps where children with diabetes learn to manage the
disease and meet other kids with similar challenges;
• educating people about ways to take action against prediabetes.
I plan to ride as much as I can before October 1, and I know Steve will be with me in spirit. Will you join us? Let’s Stop Diabetes together!
