I lost my mother, Mary Sims, in May of 2021. She had been dealing with the challenges of life with diabetes and the seemingly inevitable complications for at least the last 20 years. It's hard to believe it has been a year. Our family misses her every day.
My Mama had grit. She didn't let diabetes define her. She loved life, her family, her friends and especially her five grandchildren, whom she asked to call her "Nita" -- a name that had long baffled me. In fact, that choice never made sense to me until last year when searching for a way to honor her memory I discovered that my good friend Jocelyn Kury who has been leading Tour de Cure teams for more than a decade had named her team "Nita's Gin Runners" in honor of her own mother, Anita. While they were few and far between, the only cocktail my mother ever enjoyed was a gin & tonic. These two amazing women did not know each other in this world but I think they would have been pleased to be part of the same team and to be helping to make a difference by supporting the ADA's mission to find a cure for diabetes.
I am asking you to support me in the Tour de Cure® because finding a cure for diabetes is urgent and personally means so much to me.
This year Tour de Cure celebrates 31 years of making an impact in communities nationwide and I’m riding to champion the over 37 million Americans living with this terrible disease because they need our support.
Help Me Reach My Goal! When you donate you make an immediate impact:
- You spread awareness of the devastating effects of diabetes.
- You advocate for a child with diabetes to have the same learning opportunities at school.
- You fund life-saving research that will bring us closer to a cure.
- You provide access to community programs and free resources that help those living with diabetes.
By participating in the Tour de Cure, I hope to inspire others to join me in this vital mission.
Thank you for making a generous donation to this cause that is so important.
