We completed our 7th Annual Alli-CATE-r's ride with a real socially distanced local ride from our house in Golden. Amazing that Cate has been living with T1D for 7 years! Exercise is the miracle drug second only to insulin. Her active lifestyle is a key factor in management of her disease. She rides, swims, or hikes everyday. Some busy days she chooses sleep or homework over exercise, we can see it in “insulin resistance” or the need for additional insulin to cover the same amount of carbs. We have also seen friends and relatives make changes in exercise and diet to help manage Type 2 diabetes without supplemental insulin. Insulet, the maker of Cate's Omnipod insulin pump has an FDA approved “closed loop” system to reduce or increase the amount of insulin. We are hopeful that Cate will be able to migrate to this new technology this summer to give her a year to dial it in before she goes to college! Andy is still the one who wakes her up in the middle of the night to get her to drink apple juice when she is low. We are doing everything we can to figure out how we will keep her healthy in college without her Dad as her roommate! This autoimmune disease is so difficult to cure. While we dream of a cure, mostly we are just hoping for better machines to manage it today. We still need your help.
Thanks in advance,
