Hi, my name is Ali! I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2015, right after Thanksgiving. Even though I was eating and drinking everything in sight, I had lost 10 pounds in 3 days and I was feeling sick! After diagnosis, I spent 3 days in the hospital while me and my family learned all about living with and managing T1D. We came home with a whole new vocabulary and lots of math!
When summer came around, I was nervous about going away to ADA Camp Midicha for the first time, but after the first week I couldn’t wait to go back! It was great to meet kids my age who were managing life with T1D. Spending time with other T1D kids made me less anxious about getting a continuous glucose monitor and pump. Since then, I have returned for both sessions of camp every year – to reconnect with old friends, meet new friends, learn about T1D and most importantly – HAVE FUN!
Today, I manage my diabetes with the help of my family and now that my sister Cecilia was diagnosed just 3 months ago, I help her manage her diabetes too.
Being an American Diabetes Association (ADA) Youth Ambassador is important to me! I want to raise awareness about T1D while raising money for camp and for a cure - for me, my sister, and so many others! Within my lifetime, I look forward to witnessing a cure.
Please support my ADA Step Out Michigan Team as we walk, run, or ride with other families to raise money and awareness for Diabetes. I will be walking with my mom and my sisters, Sofia and Cecilia on August 29, 2021.
