I will be riding in this year's annual virtual Tour de Cure on behalf of my niece Sidney. This year I will again be participating with my family's team, the Red Devils. I hope that we can bring more awareness to the cause and have some fun in the meantime!
On October 20, 2006 at age 4, Sidney was diagnosed with Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes which means she will be insulin dependent for the rest of her life. She started with the typical regimen of 4 shots of insulin a day at diagnosis.
Sidney has been using an insulin pump for about 13 years now. While the pump's technology is very helpful in better controlling the highs and lows, the insulin Sidney receives is not a cure; it is her life support. Sidney is in her freshman year at university and will be 19 in July. She has adapted well to life with diabetes and is a very active young lady—she draws, sings, has her own photography business, and performs in local theater. She also loves to hike, go fishing, and to hunt.
Please help make a difference for Sidney and for family, friends, and co-workers living with diabetes by contributing to this year’s Tour de Cure.
Thank you very much for your support!
