At age 17, Ryan Reed’s career was just taking off when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Told he would never race again, he became determined to take charge of the disease. Now, Ryan is teaming up with the American Diabetes Association to help raise awareness for diabetes and inspire others with his story. My name is Connor and I am 11 years old. If I could have one wish, it would be for a cure for diabetes. Sometimes my diabetes bag gets in the way, but I need it to carry my log book, glucose tabs, glucose meter strips and other supplies. I’m not afraid of my diabetes, but I sure wish I didn’t have it.

My mother died at age 59. I remember when she started taking insulin and how scary it seemed that she had to have medicine in order to live. I wanted so much for her to get better, but diabetes takes such an intense toll on so many parts of the body. Every day I miss her and wish I could hear her voice.
