More than 34 million adults and children in the United States have diabetes—and 1.5 million Americans are being diagnosed every year. An additional 88 million adults have prediabetes, a condition likely to lead to diabetes if not addressed.

• 34.2 million or 1 in 10: The estimated number of children and adults in the United States who have diabetes.
• Of the 34.2 million, 26.8 million are diagnosed, and 7.3 million were undiagnosed.
• 88 million: The estimated number of Americans who have prediabetes.
• Every 21 seconds someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with diabetes.
• 210,000 children and adolescents under age 20 years have diagnosed diabetes. This includes 187,000 with type 1 diabetes.
• Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower-limb amputation, and new cases of blindness among working age adults in the United States.
• Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke.
