WHAT IS TOUR DE CURE®?

Tour de Cure is the premiere fundraising event of the American Diabetes Association®. With strong support from the business community including sponsorship and corporate teams, Tour de Cure events across the country raise funds for research, advocacy, programs and education.

Tour de Cure participants can choose to ride, run, walk, or participate virtually in the event making it accessible to anyone who is passionate about ADA’s mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Participants can register as a Team Captain or participate on their own. Participants living with diabetes should register as a participant with diabetes so your community of supporters can rally behind you from start to finish on event day…and beyond! We are Connected for Life!

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN PARTICIPATING IN THE TOUR DE CURE?

Registered participants make a fundraising commitment (check local website for event minimums) to participate on event day. Tour de Cure is a fundraising event. Not only do your fundraising efforts support a path to a future free from the burdens of diabetes, but you also earn Recognition Gifts at certain fundraising milestones to congratulate your commitment to the mission.

Registered participants are encouraged to help the ADA grow its army of supporters by recruiting friends, family and co-workers to ride, run, or walk with them.

Event Day is a party to show our support for the participants with diabetes, celebrate fundraising accomplishments, and promote awareness about diabetes and the American Diabetes Association.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY RAISED FROM TOUR DE CURE GO?

“For nearly 80 years, the ADA has served as a leading authority on diabetes. In the past year, we’ve had some notable achievements, including scientific advances and quite a few firsts. We’ve helped people impacted by natural disasters, access to affordable medication, and supported unparalleled research projects at leading U.S. institutions. As we reflect on our progress, we continue our momentum—from testifying before Congress on the rising cost of insulin and working toward a solution to reduce costs, to partnering with the American Heart Association to help raise awareness of diabetes and its effect on heart disease the ADA is constantly looking at new ways to make an impact and improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.”

CAN I STILL PARTICIPATE IN TOUR DE CURE IF I DON’T RAISE THE FUNDRAISING MINIMUM?

The American Diabetes Association is a non-profit organization with a mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. That mission creates an imperative and constantly growing need for programs offered by the Association.

Participants who do not achieve the fundraising commitment by event day may choose to make a personal donation at registration, complete a commitment card stating you will fulfill the requirement within 30-days of the event or spend the day volunteering for the event and make your impact in a different way.

For fulfilling your fundraising commitment or more, you will be offered a fantastic event that includes SAG (Support and Gear), bike mechanic support, medical personnel, well-marked routes, fully stocked rest stops, an event t-shirt, lunch, diabetes resources and much more!

Check out our Fundraising Toolkit for tips and tricks to meet the fundraising minimum, including the newest fundraising feature, Facebook Fundraiser!

CAN MY CHILD PARTICIPATE WITH ME?

Absolutely! You or an appointed adult guardian must always remain with the minor (under age 12). If participating, the minor is also responsible for fundraising (check your local event for child fundraising minimums). When selecting your route, please use your best judgment based on the skill and maturity level of your child. If new to riding, we strongly recommend that prior to your Tour de Cure event you enroll your child in a Road One course offered for families by your local chapter of the League of American Bicyclists. This will teach him or her the importance of riding on the side of the road and they will learn valuable skills for riding with other cyclists in traffic. Children who are in strollers or bike carriers do not need to be registered and are not required to meet any fundraising minimum, but you will have to fill out an Emergency Information Form for them at registration.

CAN NON-REGISTERED FRIENDS AND FAMILY PARTICIPATE IN THE FINISH LINE FESTIVITIES?

Friends and family members are welcome and encouraged to join you at the finish line! There will be activities on site they may want to join as well. Keep in mind that the lunch that is served is for participants and volunteers only and they may be required to pay for lunch.

HOW LONG ARE THE ROUTES?

There are varying route lengths based on the activity you choose. From the avid cyclist to the family walking with children, there is a choice you will love. Each local event is unique so make sure you search for the closest event to you and learn about all the routes and activities on event day. Find an event.

TEAMS

HOW MANY PEOPLE FORM A TEAM?

The more the merrier! Teams should strive to include five or more individuals. There is no limit as to how large a team can be. Tour de Cure is better than ever and is offering ride, run and walk routes. Members of a team do not have to choose the same activity or route.

WHY BE A PART OF A TEAM IF THE FUNDRAISING MINIMUMS ARE INDIVIDUAL?

Teams have more fun! They compete with other teams and they can earn team tents (earned when a team collectively raises $5,000; varies by event) to hang out in during the festival and much more. Many teams do extra things like team training rides or runs, team shirts or jerseys and team fundraising. Company teams are a great way to create camaraderie among employees while getting healthy and creating a presence in the community.

CAN MY COMPANY TEAM INCLUDE MORE THAN EMPLOYEES?

Yes! Successful company teams enroll not only employees, but family, friends, associates, clients, vendors, etc. The team is for everyone connected to your company in some way. Check with your employer as to whether there are any restrictions. Also, check with your employer about whether matching gifts might be available for team participants. Matching gifts are a quick and easy way to reach the individual fundraising requirements.

Check out our Team Captain Guide which supports Team Captains through successful team recruitment strategies and encouraging team and individual fundraising efforts.

I AM A TEAM CAPTAIN. HOW CAN I SEE WHO IS ON MY TEAM?

Log in to your Tour de Cure Participant Center using your username and password. Click on "Team Progress"; this will allow you to view your team roster and the amounts raised by each team member. As a Team Captain you will be automatically set-up to receive notifications when any person joins your team via the email address you use to register for the event.
