Last week, the federal government issued a final rule to allow the duration of short-term limited duration insurance (SLTDI) plans to be extended from three months to up to 12 months. However, the plans provide only the illusion of coverage because they do not have to comply with rules that prohibit plans from denying coverage for people with pre-existing conditions and also do not cover the 10 essential health benefits mandated by the Affordable Care Act, including coverage of prescription drugs, emergency services, and hospitalization.
