Support kids and healthy school meals

Kids have been eating healthier meals at schools for the past three years because of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. It’s based on a simple concept: kids should eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other healthy foods. But now that it needs to be reauthorized, opponents are trying to weaken this important legislation. This means that kids won’t have access to the healthy food choices that are key to their health and development.

Will you stand up for our children and tell your member of Congress to pass a reauthorization of child nutrition programs that preserve nutrition standards? We must ensure our schools are a place where kids can learn how to live healthy lives.

Support kids and healthy school meals

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and an advocate for the American Diabetes Association, I am concerned about the childhood obesity epidemic and rise in type 2 diabetes. As Congress considers reauthorization of child nutrition programs, I urge you to ensure that national nutrition standards are not rolled back.

I urge you to protect the recent gains in school nutrition by maintaining current nutrition standards for school meals and snacks. Many students consume more than half of their daily calories at school. With rising rates of type 2 diabetes in children, it is imperative that school meals provide the right nutrients to students so they can excel physically and academically.

I'm counting on you to support a reauthorization of child nutrition programs that upholds current nutrition standards. Thank you for your consideration.
